Psalm 22:1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
The question that opens this psalm is a familiar one to many Christians. Not because they have read it here in the book of Psalms. But rather because they have read it in the gospels. This question was one that Jesus Christ cried out to God as he hung on the cross (Matthew 27:46, Mark 15:34). The ESV Study Bible note on Matthew 27:46 states that these words are among "the most profoundly mysterious words in the entire Bible. In some sense Jesus had to be cut off from the favor of and fellowship with the Father that had been his eternally, because he was bearing the sins of his people and therefore enduring God’s wrath" (cf. Isa. 53:6, 10; Hab. 1:13; Rom. 3:25; 2 Cor. 5:21; Gal. 3:13; 1 John 2:2).
This is truly an incredible statement ... God forsaken of God? How can it be? Yet it was. All because Jesus, the God-Man was willing to be our substitute ... to pay the penalty for our sin that a just God required ... to face the wrath of almighty God against our sin ... ALL SO THAT WE WOULD NEVER HAVE TO!
Praise God for his amazing grace and his indescribable gift of salvation in Jesus Christ. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
